For more than three decades, Bijon Devnath has worked across several parts of India’s entertainment and dance industry, building a career that connects Bollywood choreography, television production, live performances and dance education. His professional journey began in Mumbai after moving from Agartala, Tripura, at a young age.
Devnath entered the Mumbai dance scene at a time when establishing a career depended heavily on training, performance experience and industry relationships. His early years included formal dance training under Shiamak Davar at Nana Chowk. He later worked with several established choreographers, gaining experience in film songs, stage performances and movement for the camera.
A Mumbai Journey That Started With Dance
Devnath’s move from Agartala to Mumbai marked the beginning of a long association with the city’s entertainment industry. Without an established film-industry background, he built his career through dance training and professional assignments.
His work with choreographers such as Ganesh Acharya, the late Saroj Khan, Remo D’Souza, Pony Verma and Vaibhavi Merchant became part of his professional journey. Each association brought exposure to different forms of choreography and production work.

Devnath’s influence as a teacher has also extended to dancers who went on to develop professional careers of their own.
His list of mentored choreographers includes Mudassar Khan, Siddhesh Pai, Rahul Thombre, Bobby Batra and twins Sumeet and Saahil. Several dancers connected with his training network have also worked outside India.
Vivek Pathak has continued his dance career in Canada, Vineesha D’costa in Abu Dhabi and Rajesh Chauhan in London. His wider student and trainer network also includes Labhesh Solanki, Deepu Singh, Sohail Shaikh, Yusuf Khan and Jay Bhattacharya.

Film Choreography and the Homebound Connection
Devnath’s Bollywood career includes collaborations with leading choreographers and work associated with film productions.
His professional journey includes associations with Ganesh Acharya, Saroj Khan, Remo D’Souza, Pony Verma and Vaibhavi Merchant. Through these assignments, he gained experience in song choreography, performer preparation and production-based dance work.
His filmography also includes associate track choreography work connected with Homebound, a project featuring Vishal Jethwa. The film has received attention within the independent and festival film circuit, placing Devnath’s choreography work alongside a project outside the conventional commercial song-and-dance format.
Film choreography can involve several stages of production. Choreographers and dance teams must work with directors, performers and camera crews while keeping movement aligned with the visual plan of a scene.
Television Added Another Dimension
Devnath’s career has also included television work across major Indian entertainment networks.
He has worked as a freelance choreographer and mentor on productions linked with Sony Entertainment Television, Colors TV and Star Plus. His television assignments have also included work with Frames Production Company Pvt Ltd.
Television dance requires quick preparation because performances are often produced around fixed shooting schedules. Rehearsals, costume changes, camera positions and editing plans all affect the final sequence.

Large-Scale Tribute Performances
Live entertainment has been another long-running part of Devnath’s career.
He worked on tribute performances associated with the Indian Television Academy Awards in 2006 and 2007 and the Zee Gold Awards in 2012. His work with the ITA Awards involved collaboration with Shashi Ranjan, President of the Indian Television Academy.
Another major stage assignment was a tribute to Amitabh Bachchan at the ICICI Bank Awards. Devnath choreographed the performance, which received a standing ovation from Bachchan.
His live choreography credits also include touring properties such as the Kalyanji Anandji Little Star Kids Show, Johnny Lever Nite and Amit Kumar Live.
Six Years of School Dance Training
Devnath’s work has not been limited to professional entertainment. He has also spent years working with schools in Mumbai.
At Thakur Public School in Thakur Village, Kandivali, he served as lead dance instructor for six years. During this period, the school’s dance team won first place in an inter-school dance competition on two consecutive occasions. More than 55 schools took part in the competitions.
His institutional work has also included Swami Vivekanand International School, St. Mary’s ICSE ISC & International School, Queen Mary’s School, St. Agnes High School and VIBGYOR High School.
These assignments gave students access to structured choreography and regular performance training while preparing them for school-level competitions and events.
Awards Across India and Overseas
Devnath’s career has also been marked by awards presented at industry and public events.
His honours include the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2021, followed by Dadasaheb Phalke International Icon Awards recognition in Dubai in 2023 and 2025. He received the Bollywood Iconic Achievement Award in 2024 and the International Pride Award in 2025.
His other listed honours include the Youth Icon Indian Award, IIFTA Award, Rashtriya Achiever Award, Gold Icon National Award and Global Glory Award.
Award presentations have involved personalities including Sonu Sood, Bhagyashree, Mandakini, Udit Narayan and Vindu Dara Singh.
A Career Shaped by the Guru-Student Relationship
Teaching remains central to Devnath’s view of dance. His personal philosophy places importance on the role of a guru in an artist’s development.
His stated mantra, “No fame, no gain without a guru,” reflects a career built around learning and passing knowledge to others.

Devnath is preparing for the next phase of his career with his life story being developed for an international book planned for launch in Dubai. He is also nominated for an Indian government award.
