One of the most defining moments of his career was being selected as part of Nadoja Belagallu Veeranna’s troupe by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, to represent India at the first-ever International Puppet Festival in Myanmar (Yangon). Performing alongside his gurus on a global platform remains one of his proudest achievements. Over the years, he has presented hundreds of performances across India at national and state-level festivals, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and cultural institutions alike.

Born in the small village of Bevinahalli in Koppal district, a region known for its ancient Kannada heritage, Dr. Surendra Swami’s life story is one of perseverance against extreme hardship. He was born as a twin to Sanna Mallaiah and Lalithamma, into a Jangam family that struggled with severe poverty. His grandfather and father survived through ritual-based livelihoods, often begging for grain to make ends meet. Yet, amidst adversity, spirituality, tradition, and art shaped the foundation of his life.

Despite financial hardships and displacement caused by drought, he completed his early education through government schools in Ballari and Sandur. He pursued higher education with determination, graduating with First Class from Sri Gavisiddeshwar College, Koppal. The untimely death of his father during his studies forced him to pause his education and shoulder family responsibilities. However, his commitment to learning never faded.

He later completed his Master’s degree from Manasagangothri, Mysore, and pursued advanced research at Kannada University, where he presented a thesis on “Use of Kannada Language in Administration – Problems and Challenges” under the guidance of Dr. Ashoka Kumar Ranjere. In recognition of his academic contribution, he was conferred an honorary doctorate.

Theatre runs in his blood. His grandfather hailed from the Bayalata (open theatre) tradition, his grandmother actively participated in the freedom struggle against the Razakars, and his father was a Bayalata story coordinator. Growing up in this environment, Dr. Surendra Swami naturally gravitated toward theatre, poetry, folk arts, and performance.

Over the years, he has acted in 83 plays, performing a wide range of roles. Bellary theatre served as the foundation of his artistic journey, where he worked extensively with the Rangathorana Theatre Group for nearly eight years. His learning deepened under the mentorship of Nadoja Sri Belagallu Veeranna, founder of Sri Ramanjina Thogalugombe Mela Trust, and later through the continuous support of Sri Prakash Belagallu.

To ensure the survival of puppetry, Dr. Surendra Swami founded “Ranga Gangotri Kala Tanda”, through which he has trained and nurtured several young puppet artists. He has also taken puppetry to government schools in Bevinahalli, teaching children through live demonstrations and extracurricular programs—keeping the art alive at the grassroots level.

As a theatre and puppet artist, he has been actively associated with renowned cultural institutions such as Rangathorana Bellary, Sri Ramanjina Thogalugombe Mela Trust, Mahadeva Cultural Art Trust, Rangasiri Bellary, and Sri Basaveshwara Bayalata Trust. His contributions span acting, storytelling, stage design, and mentorship, earning him recognition and felicitation from numerous organisations.

One of his most celebrated performances is the iconic puppet show “Bapuji (Gandhi)”, written and directed by Nadoja Belagallu Veeranna. Broadcast on Chandana TV, the production has been performed in seven countries with over 10,000 shows, including its historic international presentation in Myanmar under the banner of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

While awaiting her Class 12 results, she followed her mother’s suggestion and began taking home tuitions for neighbourhood children. Her return to tutoring came after motherhood. Unable to remain idle and driven by self-reliance, she resumed home tuitions while caring for her infant son. Managing travel, teaching, and parenting was demanding, but she persevered. Then came COVID-19—a turning point that transformed challenges into opportunities. Swiftly adapting to online education, she tripled her income and discovered a renewed sense of purpose.

The most defining phase of her life followed soon after. On 31st January 2022, her mother retired. The next day, she fell victim to an online fraud, losing ₹7.5 lakh—her lifetime savings. Witnessing her mother’s emotional breakdown pushed Shilpi into depression. Seeking healing through purpose, she joined a private institute as a Senior Maths Faculty.

What followed was transformation. She invested heavily in upgrading her teaching methodology, mastering batch teaching, and revisiting pedagogy for Maths and Science. She cleared CTET, acquired international certifications for IB and IGCSE boards, and embraced the responsibility of being what many students today see as their last academic hope.

Her results spoke volumes. Handling 35 students across multiple batches, she introduced rigorous practice sessions, including late-night guided problem-solving—without charging extra. For Shilpi, Maths was never about memorisation; it was about clarity, consistency, and confidence. Over the last three years, her students have consistently achieved average results above 95%, earning her the trust of parents and the admiration of learners.

Gradually, her role evolved from tutor to mentor. Students confided their fears, parents sought her counsel, and academic guidance expanded into career mentoring and emotional support. Phrases like “Ma’am, aapki baat maan lega” became her greatest reward.

When professional circumstances turned unfavourable at her institute last year, Shilpi chose dignity over compromise. What followed was extraordinary—parents and students stood by her and urged her to start independently. Within a week, Neev Coaching Academy was born, not as a business, but as a calling.

Behind her success stands a strong support system—her husband Ravish, mentor and pillar of strength; her three mothers-in-law who ensured her son was cared for; and her son Hreyansh, whose quiet maturity fuels her determination.

By Allah, no! What they did not consider part of religion cannot suddenly become part of it centuries later.”

Referring to the work of Allaamah Muizzuddin Hasan Khwaarzimi in Al-Qawl al-Mu’tamad, Adv. Nizam quoted:

“The Ruler of Irbal, King Muzaffar Abu Saeed Kaukari, was an irreligious and prodigal king. He ordered scholars of his time to abandon strict adherence to schools of law and instead follow their personal opinions. It was under his influence that Milaad Un Nabi gatherings were organized during the month of Rabi al-Awwal. He was the first king ever to introduce this practice.”

He further noted that a scholar named Abul Khattab Umar bin Hasan bin Dihya al-Andalusi supported and assisted the king in propagating this innovation. Citing the historian Ibn Kathir, Adv. Nizam pointed out that many contemporaries viewed this scholar as unreliable, and his role in endorsing the Milaad Un Nabi marked a departure from the orthodox path.

“This was not the way of the Prophet, his Companions, or the early righteous generations,” Adv. Nizam A. Khan reminded the gathering.

Prophet Replaced Jahiliyyah Festivals with Eids

Adv. Nizam also quoted the hadith narrated by Abu Dawood on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), highlighting how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) abolished pre-Islamic festivals and replaced them with two divinely sanctioned celebrations—Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

“When the Prophet came to Madinah, he found people celebrating two days of festivity from the era of Jahiliyyah. He said: ‘Verily Allah has replaced them with something better: Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.’ This shows clearly that no additional festivals, including Milaad Un Nabi, were ever sanctioned in Islam.”

He cited the hadith recorded in Bukhari and Muslim in which the Prophet declared: “The best of mankind are my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then there will come people who will bear witness without being asked, and who will betray trusts and make vows that they do not fulfill.”

According to him, this proves that the earliest generations had the purest understanding of Islam, and anything absent from their practice cannot be added later.

He further highlighted that the Prophet himself warned against innovations in religion, stating: “The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. As a player, Harish has an impressive record. He has won the Udupi District Championship multiple times, placed in the top 10 at state tournaments, and ranked 18th in national competitions. Recently, he was the 2nd runner-up at the SNG School of Chess Open Rapid Tournament.

Harish also enjoys playing online chess. He recently placed 3rd in an hourly bullet arena with 238 participants on Lichess and 5th in a blitz event with 850 players.

In addition to coaching, Harish  organized over 50 tournaments in the Udupi and Mangalore districts. While proud of his contributions to tournament organization, Harish’s primary focus now lies in coaching.

Inspiration and Legacy

Harish finds inspiration in Venkatachalam Kameswaran, India’s first international arbiter and the first official coach of Viswanathan Anand. Harish even wrote a book, The Journey to Temple City, about Kameswaran’s 2009 visit to Udupi, where he served as the chief guest for a tournament Harish organized.

“Kameswaran’s dedication deeply inspired me,” Harish says. “I strive to pass on his values of hard work and commitment to my students.”

Harish is also deeply influenced by chess legends like Bobby Fischer and José Raúl Capablanca. “I’ve studied Fischer’s 800 games—it was a tremendous learning experience. Capablanca’s endgames have been a huge inspiration for me,” he shares.

Thalassery biryani is one of the quite popular biryanis. It is known for its unique aroma and taste. It comes from the unusual variety of rice called Jeerakasla. Thalassery biryani originated from the malabar region of Kerala. Unlike the other kind of popular biryanis where basmati rice is used, thalassery biriyani is made using a premium quality short grain rice. This rice is also known as kaima rice or biriyani rice in Kerala.

Biryani masala made from a unique blend of kerala spices is another contributor to one of this most amazing & flavorful biriyani. If you are not accessible to the jeerakasala rice, then you may try this with aged basmati rice.

The process of making thalassery biryani is not much different from the Pakki Hyderabadi biryani except the usage of tomatoes her. However the method of cooking Jeerakasala or kaima is different from cooking basmati rice. You have to use half cup of ghee to make it more flavourful.

Preparation for thalassery chicken biryani

The ingredients for biryani masala powder are: 1 star anise(small), 4 green cardamoms, 4 cloves, a 2 inch cinnamon stick, 2 strands of mace, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon shahi jeera, 1 teaspoon fennel seeds, 1 red chilli, and ½ teaspoon peppercorns. Clean all the spices. Then put them in a blender jar. Roasting is optional as the powder will be roasted later with the chicken. Grind everything into a fine powder. Then keep it set aside.

Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of ghee to a biryani pot. Then fry the cashews until they turn light golden. Add the raisins. Then cook them until they become plump. Move both to a plate. It will be later used for garnishing.

In the same pan, add the onions. Fry them evenly until golden or light brown. This step can be skipped if you are using store bought fried onions. But onions fried in ghee give a better aroma. Set the onions aside with the cashews and raisins. These will also be used for garnishing later.

Making thalassery chicken biryani

Some ghee will be remaining in pan now. In the remaining ghee, add the sliced onions. It will be for the gravy. Fry them until golden. Then add ginger garlic and green chili paste. This recipe uses no red chili powder. All the heat comes from green chilies. Two green chilies are enough. Freshly made paste works best. Sauté until the aroma turns nice and strong. Add the cleaned chicken. Then sauté it for 2 to 3 minutes until the chicken turns pale. Add turmeric and the biryani masala prepared earlier. Cook on low heat for another 2 to 3 minutes. Cover the pot. Let it cook for 2 to 3 more minutes. The chicken should start turning slightly tender. Start adding tomatoes, salt, and curd. Sauté for 2 minutes. Then lower the heat and cover again. Cook it until the chicken becomes fully tender. Stir occasionally. It will stop the gravy from burning. The gravy will be thick by the end. Chicken naturally releases enough moisture on low heat. It will help it to cook itself completely.

While the chicken cooks, begin preparing the biryani rice. The method is almost the same as making Malabar nei choru. Wash the rice. Then drain it well. Traditional Malabar biryani uses Jeerakasala rice. It needs no soaking or draining. Basmati rice can be used if that rice is not available. Wash and soak basmati for 30 minutes. Then drain it. On another burner, bring water to a boil.

How to make thalassery biriyani

Heat a pot with 1 to 2 tablespoons of ghee. Then sauté the whole spices. Add the drained rice and sauté for 2–3 minutes. Add salt and then pour in hot water. Cold water should be avoided because it makes the rice sticky. Stir gently.

Cook on medium heat until the water is mostly absorbed but the rice still looks wet. Lower the heat, cover the pot, and cook until all the water is absorbed and the rice turns dry. At this point, the rice is about 90% cooked. If the rice feels undercooked, then sprinkle a little warm water and continue cooking.

By now, the chicken gravy should be ready and thick. Add mint and coriander leaves on top of the chicken and spread the chicken mixture evenly.

Layering malabar chicken biriyani

Layer half of the rice over the chicken. Then sprinkle a little garam masala, some fried onions, and mint. Add the remaining rice on top. Sprinkle coriander leaves, mint, fried onions, cashews, and raisins. Pour ghee mixed with a little rose water over the top.

Cover the pot with a tight and heavy lid. If the lid isn’t tight enough, seal it with foil or a thick, damp cloth. Place a steel plate over the top and set a heavy object on it.

Heat an old tawa or griddle until very hot. Place the biryani pot on the tawa and cook for 12 to 15 minutes on medium heat. Let the biryani rest afterward. By this time, the moisture in the gravy should have evaporated.

Serve Malabar biryani with onion raita. While serving, make sure each portion has an even amount of rice and masala.
